Scramble a childhood treat...

During my childhood days it was popularly known as the "iskrambol" it was usually sold in the streets usually near the schools. This is a popular street treat for kids because its cold ,colorful , sweet and its cheap. It is made up of ice shavings ,milk, vanilla extract flavoring ,sweetener and some red food coloring to obtain that pink color and usually topped with powdered milk .
Last Sunday when I'm about to go home I saw a long que inside a food court and then I saw its the "good ol' scramble" and then the next day I saw a stall inside a mall near my place so I decided to try it for reminiscin' sake. But I now I noticed that they tweak this treat a little bit by adding some chocolate and strawberry syrup, you can also add some of your toppings of choice like rice crispies, marshmallows, rainbow or choco sprinkles for a minimal fee of 4 pesos per add-on.For a price ranging from 7-17 pesos this surely a big hit for students and kids.As for the adults like me it brings back the sweet and colorful grade school memories.

As for this picture I let them put the powdered milk but for me I prefer not to have those.

Available and can be seen in SM malls.

Shin Ton Yon(Kiampong and litid)

Its already 2pm after a half day of toy and gadget window shopping last Wednesday in Greenhills I started to find a place to have lunch.Being bored with fast food and food court fare It took me a while to decide what to eat so I browsed and walked around the area and I chanced upon this Chinese deli joint named SHIN TON YON.The place has a distinct 80's Chinatown feel ,they offer Chinese deli like sausages and cold cuts as well as a variety of dishes and treats. Then I ordered a dish called as litid (tendon) to compliment the Kiampong(Chinese style rice).

I have tasted many varieties of this kind of fried rice. For me a real Kiampong must not be too sticky nor too plain and there has to be that unusual smoky flavor.Shin Ton Yon's Kiampong is filled with chopped scrambled eggs, pork and Chinese mushrooms and the taste is great and yet not too heavy nor light on the belly .Like this a lot!!

This dish reminds me of the old Chinese home style cooking ,it has julienned carrots and button mushrooms in sauce. The sauce has a very light and subtle taste but what I like about this is the texture of the tendons ,a jelly like character.Absolutely delish!

Guantanamera

Guantanamera- a poem by Cuban patriot Jose Marti composed as a song by Jose Fernandez Diaz.A song of compassion and humility ,Guantamera became a vessel for romantic ,patriotic, social and humor not only in Cuba but also in the whole Latin America.

I love the first verse

In Spanish

Yo soy un hombre sincero de donde crece la palma,

Yo soy un hombre sincero de donde crece la palma.

Y antes de morime ,quiero echar mis versos del alma

IN ENGLISH

I am a truthful man from where the palm grows

I am a truthful man from where the palm grows

And before I die ,I want to pour my verses from my soul

NOYNOY- New Leader, Big Hope or Disaster?

On July 30,president-elect Benigno Simeon"Noynoy"Cojuangco Aquino III will be inaugurated as the 15th president of the Republic of the Philippines after being proclaimed by the Philippine Congress last June 9.

As far as I can remember following the death of his mother ,the late President Corazon Aquino there was a clamor for him to run for the highest position in the land but there is a reluctance on his part to hid that call. He told the people that he will be inheriting the problems of the government if he decides to run. After the funeral of President Aquino that overwhelming support grew and became known as the "Noynoy Phenomenon".

September 2009,Liberal party standard bearer Senator Mar Roxas announced his withdrawal and expresses his support for Noynoy to run for the presidential race.During the election last May 10 ,in the unofficial tallies conducted by the COMELEC and PPCV and later by the congress official tally Aquino have a huge advantage against his closest presidential rival.

When asked what can the people expect from his first 100 days in office? His answer was to identify and track down the problems of the country first so that the proper solution may be applied to each concern. Many people both critics and supporters are so anxious about this new leadership. The critics say that he lacks experience,a star-struck president, his administration will be disorganized and no concrete plans for the nation while his supporters are a bit in a delusion saying that when his tenure starts everything will be fine.

In my humble opinion at this early stage we cannot say that it is a make or break thing. This country was ravaged by corruption and social malady for decades. Many things have yet to be done in this country ,all I can say is that we cannot and should not put the blame nor admiration on one man alone. The Philippine problem ,needs, rather a political solution are social and economic solutions. The change that we all yearning for ,can only be achieved by supporting each other ,the government cannot uplift this nation without the support of its citizens. Each one of is saying we want "change" to the point that the word itself become a cliche, how can we attain that goal if we ourselves cannot make little changes in our lives and even in our thinking. And nonetheless Noynoy is only human so we cannot malign nor praise him yet there's a long race ahead of us.All we can do is to unite, cooperate and pray for the resurgence of this nation.

Voice Of Truth - Casting Crowns

Revelation 3:7-8(NIV)

To the angel of the church of Philadelphia write:

these are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David,What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.I know your deeds.See,I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

"Che" My Hero,My Villain part 2

Photo taken by Alberto Korda ,probably one of the most famous image of a person and most reproduced image in the entire history of photography

You have seen him in posters ,t-shirts and pop-culture merchandise, a result of world consumerism and commercialism which is the opposite of these man's convictions and what he represents. Some said he is the symbol of their ideologies and political statements. But who is Che Guevara? I remembered one time a friend of mine asked me who he was, then I threw back the question to her then she answered a "rock star".Maybe because she saw t-shirts which has been sold in a record store or yet she noticed many musicians wear them,I cannot blamed her. And many young people wear and use Che's image without knowing who he is ,what he did and what he represents, they like the image because they said it is "cool".

Going back to the title of why he became my hero as well as a villain to me.I first encountered the name Che Guevara when I watched the movie "CHE(1969)" an Omar Sharif starrer in the heydays of the Betamax when I was still in sixth grade.Mesmerized by his persona and character the name lingered until my adulthood. Then in the nineties my interest in the man progressed I started to buy merchandise with his image on it but I told myself before I wear the shirt I must know who really this man is and what he represents then I read and bought biographies of Guevara.

The qualities of Guevara I admired are his defiance in the face of overwhelming odds and the dedication for the poor and the sick which are the fruits of exploitation and social injustice. This indignation and convictions were awakened during his travels in the Latin Americas (Motorcycle Diaries). His advocacies and goals were agrarian reform and literacy."Comandante"which he is also known is a man of action ,a warrior ,a worker ,an idealist and a man who is always looking forward to throw himself into something or a cause. After overthrowing the US backed Batista regime Che remains simple though he knows the finer things in life he sees material things as insignificant.

After dethroning the Batista era marked the other side of Che,he send men to the firing squad without judicial process .Guevara then became a "hardened" man who had no qualms about death penalty or summary or collective trials. The unrelenting execution of the enemies of the revolution and continued disregard for human rights made Che a bloodthirsty atheist motivated by pure hate.

The myth of Ernesto Guevara continues to enchant me though I do not totally agree with all his actions. In my mind he can be a hero or a villain depending on how one would perceive it .Good or evil Che continues to be a symbol of different causes. For me he can neither be or both.
